SEARCH AND RESCUE: WATER

Scenario Description

Domain: Sea, air

Situation: A ship has lost its cargo in the Västervik archipelago and the debris has spread over an area outside Gränsö. It needs to be located as fast as possible. Information about the quantity has been given beforehand to make sure that the mission can be conducted successfully.

Area: An estimated area outside Gränsö (see image)

Mission: Search the water for the debris

Objectives: Use available resources to locate and identify the debris

Measures/Scoring:

  • Time to locate the debris
  • Correctly identified objects
  • Traveled distance and energy

Resources:

  • USV’s (unmanned surface vehicles)
  • UAV’s (unmanned aerial vehicles)
  • Drone Operators
  • Object Detector

Prerequisites:

  • Number of objects are known beforehand
  • An estimate of the affected area is given beforehand

Challenges:

  • Drifting objects due to wind and waves
  • Resource allocation due to multiple teams competing or collaborating
  • Object detection
  • Collision avoidance
  • Additional information (e.g. more debris, changes in priority, drone battery change e.t.c.)

Roles:

  • Operator

Expansion 1

Collect the debris

Domain: Sea, air

Situation: The debris is potentially environmentally toxic and poses an obstacle to other boats in the fairway. It needs to be removed from the water and taken to a dock where it can be handled properly as soon as possible.

Area: An estimated area outside Gränsö (see image)

Mission: Collect the debris and bring it to the dock

Objectives: Use available resources collect and transport the debris

Measures/Scoring:

  • Time to collect the debris
  • Number of objects collected
  • Traveled distance and energy

Resources:

  • USV’s (unmanned surface vehicles)
  • UAV’s (unmanned aerial vehicles)
  • Drone Operators
  • Object Detector
  • Manned boat

Prerequisites:

  • Number of objects are known beforehand
  • An estimate of the affected area is given beforehand

Challenges:

  • Drifting objects due to wind and waves
  • Resource allocation due to multiple teams competing or collaborating
  • Object detection
  • Collision avoidance
  • Additional information (e.g. more debris, changes in priority, drone battery change e.t.c.)
  • Picking up moving objects
  • Docking

Roles:

  • Operator
  • Human agents

Expansion 2

Debris has spread

Domain: Sea, air, land

Situation: The wind and waves has increased, and the debris have spread over a larger area. Some of it might have drifted ashore.

Area: Undefined

Mission: Locate the debris in an undefined area

Objectives: Use available resources to identify and locate the debris

Measures/Scoring:

  • Time to find the debris
  • Number of objects located
  • Traveled distance and energy

Resources:

  • USV’s (unmanned surface vehicles)
  • UAV’s (unmanned aerial vehicles)
  • Drone Operators
  • Object Detector
  • Manned boat
  • Human agents
  • UGV’s (unmanned ground vehicles)

Prerequisites:

  • Number of objects missing are known beforehand

Challenges:

  • Drifting objects due to wind and waves
  • Resource allocation due to multiple teams competing or collaborating
  • Object detection
  • Collision avoidance
  • Additional information (e.g. areas of interest, more debris, changes in priority, drone battery change e.t.c.)

Roles:

  • Operator
  • Human agents

Expansion 3

Sinking debris

Domain: Sea (sub-surface)

Situation: The debris is sinking and can not be located from the air or surface.

Area: An estimated area outside Gränsö (sub-surface)

Mission: Locate the debris sub-surface

Objectives: Use available resources to identify and locate the debris

Measures/Scoring:

  • Time to find the debris
  • Number of objects located
  • Traveled distance and energy

Resources:

  • Drone Operators
  • Object Detector
  • AUV’s (autonomous underwater vehicles)

Prerequisites:

  • Number of objects are known beforehand

Challenges:

  • Object detection
  • Collision avoidance

Roles:

  • Operator
